What You Learn in the Fifth Grade

Fifth grade learning paths build on previous years.  We have added a couple of standards from the State of California but your state may be slightly different.  Not all subjects are available for every grade.  Activities to supplement your new understanding of what your child is learning at each grade will follow soon so stay tuned!

  • Fifth Grade Geography and Social Studies

    Fifth Graders will continue their work with maps, coordinates and related earth biomes. International time zones. Types of energy and weather. Vocabulary. Activities include making maps from scratch.

  • Fifth Grade Language Arts

    Fifth Graders should be able to read, analyze and discuss what they are reading. Their vocabulary is extensive. They can understand poetry. They should be able to discuss their opinions and observations.

  • Fifth Grade Art

    Fifth graders will learn how they can see history in art from different periods. Early lifestyles, historic figures and events. Renaissance, baroque, up to abstract expressionism and pop art. American history in painting as they will be studying American history in class.

  • Fifth Grade Math

    In Fifth Grade students use a lot of decimals. Even more challenging they then use fractions. Multiplying and Dividing. Understanding volume. Converting units of measure. Graphing weather data. Measuring shapes, measurement and geometry. How do you do this in Europe?

    Your student is more opinionated and observant. Now we give them a set of skills to evaluate music so they can decide what they like and how music connects them to their environment.
